Ariel Palitz is the first person to hold the title of Executive Director for New York City's Office of Nightlife, bit is more widley know as the Nightlife Mayor, a position she held from 2018 until 2023. Serving under both Mayor Bill de Blasio and Mayor Eric Adams, Palitz was tasked with building a new government office dedicated to serving as a liaison between the city's nightlife industry, residents, and government agencies. The role created to support a thriving and safe nightlife scene that benefits hospitality businesses, culture and community. Among her many challenges was navigating the hospitality industry through the Covid 19 pandemic.
Born and raised in New York City, Palitz has over two decades of experience in the nightlife industry. She began her career as a promoter and event planner at iconic clubs such as The Tunnel, Limelight and S.O.B's. In 2004, she opened Sutra Lounge in the East Village, a nightclub known for its diverse music and cultural events. Her tenure as a club owner provided her with firsthand insight into the challenges faced by nightlife establishments.
In addition to her business ventures, Palitz served on Community Board 3 for seven years, where she was involved in the liquor licensing committee. This experience allowed her to understand the regulatory landscape and advocate for policies that support both the nightlife industry and the surrounding communities.
During her time in office, Palitz worked to streamline regulations for nightlife businesses, identify non-enforcement solutions to enhance safety measures, and foster a more inclusive and accessible nightlife culture across all five boroughs. She also initiated programs like Mend NYC, which continues to offer free mediation services to help resolve conflicts between residents and nightlife establishments , and is replicated around the world.
After resigning from her official role, Palitz continues her work as an independent global government consultant and public speaker on nighttime management strategies, while advising and lobbying for the hospitality industry with Oaktree Solutions, leveraging her extensive experience to support Nightlife’s further growth and resilience.
